Jazz Aspen has been bringing great music to Aspen/Snowmass for years. More than just the spring and fall festivals Jazz Aspen Snowmass hosts the JAS Café at the little Nell, bringing world-class Jazz musicians to an intimate setting right here in our little town. They also have an education initiative teaching kids valley wide the joy of Jazz.
Jazz Aspen Snowmass anchors the festivities for Labor Day weekend with their Labor Day Festival. While it is called Jazz Aspen, every year the festival hosts, country, rock, pop and more styles of artist at their signature event. Legendary artists that have performed here include Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, BB King, Neil Young and more. Modern greats such as the Black Eyed Peas, Widespread Panic and Mumford and Sons display the shows relevance. And Country greats the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Nickel Creek and Susan Tedeschi keep it real for everyone. Held every Labor day weekend at the Snowmass Town Park under a giant music tent with a large lawn and full service food court. With ide acts between shows and free public transportation from Aspen and Snowmass this festival is easy for everyone. From reggae to funk this festival has it all.
The spring shows in June are held at the Benedict Music Tent, the same facility used by the legendary Aspen Music School. This is a more intimate setting in a covered tent with seating. This year attendees rocked out to Jackson Browne, Ben Harper, The Tedeschi Trucks band and more!
The JAS Café in the Little Nell began as a series of monthly winter concerts in 2010 and in 2012 expanded the series dramatically to include eight weekends of winter performances and seven individual summer evening concerts, making a consistent jazz program in Aspen. This unique and intimate space which seats just over 100 persons, has been described as “an oasis of cosmopolitan cool” and a new home for sophisticated music listeners in Aspen. The small tables, café seating and candle-lit ambiance, combined with the amazing performances has earned the series wide acclaim and a steady flow of repeat local patrons and tourists alike. Presenting world-class jazz, vocal and world music and jazz artists from Cuba, Brazil, France, Africa and Italy and New Orleans, among others. “Jazz Spoken Globally “ reflects both the program’s Artistic focus, and the international and diverse audience that visits Aspen each year from both the US and abroad.
JAS has furthered its community outreach with education programs and public school funding, as well as local music competitions. Allowing young musicians the opportunity to learn from legendary artists including Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves and more is an opportunity that cannot be measured in words. Since 1996 , JAS has generated over $5.6 million to support its multifaceted music education programs, JAS knows how important music is in school.
